Macrophages Switch: The Fate of Adipose Tissue in Obesity

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The development of Insulin resistance in obesity is associated with infiltration of immune cells in white adipose tissue (WAT). Especially macrophage infiltration in WAT is known to produce several proinflmmatory cytokines which induces the state of inflammation and impairs the insulin signaling and related pathways. Several animal and human studies have been conducted to unravel the mystery of metabolic dysregulation in adipose tissue because of chronic inflammation. A new and promising explanation is the switching of macrophages within WAT between M1 and M2 phenotype. In this short review, we addressed the recent advances in macrophage switch concept to explain the dysregulation of adipose tissue.

The Role of Inflammation and Changes of Adipose Tissue-Resident Immune Cells in Increasing the Risk of Cancer: A Narrative Review

The incidence of obesity, as a major health problem, has increased significantly over the past decades. This condition is associated with an increased risk of cancers, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of inflammation and changes of adipose tissue-resident immune cells on increasing the risk of cancer in obese individuals. In obesit...

Novel Role of Endogenous Catalase in Macrophage Polarization in Adipose Tissue

Macrophages are important components of adipose tissue inflammation, which results in metabolic diseases such as insulin resistance. Notably, obesity induces a proinflammatory phenotypic switch in adipose tissue macrophages, and oxidative stress facilitates this switch. Thus, we examined the role of endogenous catalase, a key regulator of oxidative stress, in the activity of adipose tissue macr...

Obesity induces a phenotypic switch in adipose tissue macrophage polarization.

Adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) infiltrate adipose tissue during obesity and contribute to insulin resistance. We hypothesized that macrophages migrating to adipose tissue upon high-fat feeding may differ from those that reside there under normal diet conditions. To this end, we found a novel F4/80(+)CD11c(+) population of ATMs in adipose tissue of obese mice that was not seen in lean mice. A...

Functional heterogeneity of CD11c-positive adipose tissue macrophages in diet-induced obese mice.

Obesity represents a state of chronic, low grade inflammation and is associated with infiltration of increased numbers of adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs). Diet-induced obesity leads to an increase in non-inflammatory M1-like ATMs displaying the CD11c surface marker. We assessed the function of CD11c-positive ATMs when insulin resistant high fat diet (HFD) mice become insulin-sensitive after s...

The Roles of Adipokines, Proinflammatory Cytokines, and Adipose Tissue Macrophages in Obesity-Associated Insulin Resistance in Modest Obesity and Early Metabolic Dysfunction

The roles of adipokines, proinflammatory cytokines, and adipose tissue macrophages in obesity-associated insulin resistance have been explored in both animal and human studies. However, our current understanding of obesity-associated insulin resistance relies on studies of artificial metabolic extremes. The purpose of this study was to explore the roles of adipokines, proinflammatory cytokines,...
